Rooted in Community, Committed to Nature
Real action, lasting impact — rooted in nature and guided by community.
As a newly established organization, Reksabumi Foundation has already taken meaningful steps to protect the environment and promote community-led conservation in Sungai Pisang. Below are some of our first initiatives, laying the foundation for larger, long-term programs.
Our Pilot Projects in Sungai Pisang
Safeguarding coral reefs and seagrass beds through local monitoring and prevention
Reksabumi is protecting the coral reefs and seagrass meadows directly in front of our land in Sungai Pisang by hiring local reef guards, placing clear signage, installing boundary buoys, and engaging in community outreach. These actions help prevent damage from "reef walkers", often outsiders, and prevent harmful practices like illegal poisoning. We also work with local fishers to reduce the risk of boat-related damage.
As a result of these efforts, we’ve seen the return of juvenile fish, visible coral regrowth, and improved catch levels reported by traditional fishers in the surrounding area, signaling that the ecosystem is slowly recovering and directly benefiting local livelihoods.
Looking ahead, we plan to launch community-based coral planting initiatives to help restore degraded reef areas and prevent coastal erosion. This will not only rebuild marine biodiversity but also strengthen natural protection for coastal communities.

Coral Reef Protection & Restoration
Safeguarding wildlife habitat by protecting and expanding forest corridors
To protect endangered species and strengthen habitat connectivity, Reksabumi has secured and permanently protected three hectares of land surrounding our base in Sungai Pisang — generously donated by our founder. Half of this land was still forested, while the other half had been used for farming. We have begun reforesting the former farmland with native tree species and fruit-bearing trees that are favored by local wildlife. We hope to make this area as a vital buffer zone and wildlife corridor for Agile gibbons (Owa ungko), leaf monkeys, hornbills, pangolins, Malayan weasels, and other threatened species.
Deforestation and land clearing in the surrounding areas have increased rapidly, driven by limited livelihood options. Forests are being cleared in broad daylight, and wildlife is being captured or displaced. We are especially concerned by the decreasing presence of Agile gibbons (Owa), their morning calls, once common near our site, are now heard less frequently. To counter this, we aim to purchase and restore more forest land in collaboration with local communities, ensuring long-term habitat protection and ecological balance.

Establishing Forest Buffer Zones

Supporting pollinators by preserving natural ecosystems and promoting biodiversity.
Reksabumi has been working to protect butterfly habitats in and around our home-based office and the forest edge in Sungai Pisang. By preserving native vegetation, avoiding pesticide use, and planting nectar-rich flowering plants, we create safe spaces for local butterfly species to thrive.
One species that has notably increased in number and is now regularly observed around our home-base is the Common Birdwing Butterfly — a protected species in Indonesia due to its declining population caused by habitat loss and illegal collection. Our efforts help preserve the natural conditions that support such rare and beautiful pollinators.
We have already recorded over 20 butterfly species in our area and continue to document them through photography and observation — not only to track biodiversity but also to raise awareness about their vital role in the ecosystem.

Mangrove Restoration and Nursery
These early initiatives are just the beginning. We're working to expand these efforts into full-scale programs, supported by research, community collaboration, and long-term conservation strategies.

Protecting what’s left, growing what’s next — restoring coastal resilience one tree at a time.
Reksabumi is taking early steps to restore mangrove ecosystems in Sungai Pisang by both protecting existing trees and growing new ones. In front of our land stands a lone mangrove tree — a small but powerful reminder of what’s at stake. We’ve taken measures to protect it while using it as a symbol to engage the community in conversations about coastal conservation
longside this, we’ve established a small mangrove nursery as a foundation for future reforestation. The nursery serves not only to cultivate native seedlings but also to involve local youth and residents in hands-on learning, awareness-raising, and collaborative restoration efforts.
